Denso Ten Navigation System

User experience and interface design for vehicle infotainment systems

Company

DENSO TEN Limited, formerly Fujitsu Ten Limited, is a Japanese company developing and manufacturing car audio, video, navigation, and control systems, and is a subsidiary of DENSO Corporation.

Challenge

I worked on the infotainment system and all it's functional components which included the heads-up display and Voice User Interaction (VUI). Working directly with the stake holders and engineering team located in Japan, we connected weekly to discuss and curate issues within the system to work on. Once we received questions or requests from our stake holders and engineering team, we then create a ux plan from discovering what the issues are to finding and implementing solutions.

Role

I served as the UX lead of this project. I focused on user research and analysis, usability interviews, information architecture, wireframes, task flows, prototyping, and design. I worked along side two other UX/UI designers and UX researcher

System Audit and User Testing

We would start off by conducting user tests. We created user test scripts compiled of questions arounds specific components within the infotainment system. These interviews lasted around 45 minutes and consisted of randomly selected users based on the requested user profile.

Ideation

After studying our findings from the system audit and user tests, we designed our ideas and created various solutions based on the found issues. A complex system with many components, a few of the many elements I worked on included the "Back" link, Right Hand Drive and Navigation.

Prototyping

Once we created concept solutions, we would either move forward with implementation or user test our concepts with low or high fidelity click through prototypes.
